TDG Hazardous Classifications

class1sm.gif

EXPLOSIVES

1.1 - a substance or article with a mass explosion hazard.

1.2 - A substance or article with a fragment projection hazard.

1.3 - A substance or article which has a fire hazard along with either a minor blast or a minor projection hazard or both, but not a mass explosion hazard.

1.4 - A substance or article which presents no significant hazard; explosion effects are largely confined to the package and no projection or fragments of appreciable size or range are to be expected.

1.5 - A very insensitive substance which nevertheless has a mass explosive hazard like those substances in 1.1

1.6 - An extremely insensitive substance which does not have a mass explosion hazard.

2.1 - A Flammable Gas

class2.2sm.gif (3486 bytes)

2.2 - A non-flammable, non-poisonous, non-corrosive gas.

class2.3sm.gif (3891 bytes)

2.3 - A poisonous Gas

Inhalation Hazard

Flammable Liquids

A liquid with a close-cup flash point not greater than 61°C.

Flashpoint is the minimum temperature at which a substance gives off flammable vapors which, when in contact with an ignition source (heat or flame), will ignite.

4.1- Flammable Solids - A solid which under normal condition transport is readily ignitable and would burn violently or persistently or which causes or contributes to fire through friction or from heat retained from manufacturing or processing or is a self-reactive substance.

class4.2sm.gif (3119 bytes)

4.2 - Spontaneously Combustible - A substance liable to spontaneous combustion under normal condition of transport, or when in contact with air, liable to spontaneous heating to the point where it ignites.

class4.3sm.gif (4297 bytes)

4.3 - Dangerous When Wet - A substance that, on contact with water emits dangerous quantities of flammable gases or become spontaneously combustible on contact with water or water vapour.

class5.1sm.gif (4176 bytes)

5.1 - Oxidizing Substances - A substance which causes or contributes to the combustion of other material by yielding oxygen or other oxidizing substances whether or not the substance itself is combustible.

class5.2sm.gif (3902 bytes)

5.2 - Organic Peroxide - An organic conpoud that contains the bivalent "-0-0-" structure which is strong oxidizing agent and may be liable to explosive decomposition or sensitive to heat, shock or friction.
class6.1sm.gif (4264 bytes) 6.1 - Poisonous Substances - A solid or liquid that is poisonous through inhalations of it's vapours, by skin or by ingestion.
6.2 - Infectious Substances - Organisms that are infectious or that are reasonably believed to be infectious to humans or animals
class6.2sm.gif (4085 bytes) Poisonous - Inhalation Hazard
class7sm.gif (3631 bytes) Radioactive Materials

Within the meaning of the Atomic Energy Control Act with activity greater than 74kBq/kg.

class8sm.gif (3960 bytes) Corrosive Substances- A Substance that causes visible necrosis of skin or corrodes steel or non-clad aluminum.
class9sm.gif (4637 bytes) Miscellaneous products, substances or organisms - presenting dangers sufficient to warrant regulation in transport but which cannot be ascribed to any other class.
